Η classification, transfer and circulation of old vehicles that do not carry systems anti-lock braking system (ABS) has a ban. Specifically, they have expired the deadlines for retroactive placement. also the Ministry of Transport with his newest circular clarifies about the existence of an ABS system on old vehicles.

Circular

"Regarding the transfer of circulating vehicles or the classification of countless used vehicles in our country that have pre-installed ABS, the establishment of the existence of the system can be proven on a case-by-case basis, either from the type approval of the vehicle, or from the foreign registration license or a combination of the registration license and the vehicle type approval was issued. Only in the event that there is no proof of the aforementioned, then the finding of its existence ABS it is based on alternative supporting documents".(*)

New classified <2004

There is the marking that trucks, buses and trailers with national type approval issued in our country. These are classed as new after 1/1/2004 and have mandatory ABS. Therefore, for the transfer of these vehicles, it is not mandatory to apply the above procedures to establish the existence of ABS.

Classified Used Models <2009

Also, used vehicles imported into our country for registration, with first registration as new after 29/4/2009. In particular, in which there is a finding from their marketing authorization or from the certificate of conformity that it is covered by European Type Approval (EC), they have a classification without the requirement of any additional supporting document for the existence of the ABS.

Necessary supporting documents

a. certificate of the manufacturing plant or

b. certificate of the official agency representing the vehicle manufacturer in Greece or

c. KTEO certificate issued after a partial voluntary check of the braking system. In order to carry out this check, a responsible declaration of Law 1599/1986 must be made, signed by a technical workshop manager of Law 1575/1985, in which there is a reference to the vehicle submitted for inspection to the KTEO:

  • The vehicle details (manufacturing factory, factory type, identification number (VIN).
  • That has an anti-lock braking system (ABS, EBS, etc.).
  • The basic building blocks of the anti-lock braking system, the position of each one on the vehicle and whether it is visually accessible without disassembling any mechanical part.
  • The warning light or lights or other warning devices present in the vehicle with special reference to their touch-off mode (on-off) through which the driver has information about the proper operation of the anti-lock braking system during braking or any failure report.
  • The possible existence and location of the on-board socket for the connection of the ABS system diagnostic device.
  • The description of the existing electrical connection arrangement with the towing or towing vehicle as the case may be, regarding the ABS system.
