Schmitz Cargobull Trailer

Schmitz Cargobull Trailer AG is a German manufacturer of semi-trailers, trailers and truck bodies. The company's headquarters are in Horstmar, Germany, and its headquarters are in the neighboring town of Altenberge in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The family company had 6.500 employees in the business year 2018/2019 and realized a turnover of 2,290 billion euros. Therefore it is the market leader in Europe. The families of Dr. Heinz Schmitz, Peter Schmitz and Bernd Hoffmann hold equal shares in the company.

Establishment and expansion

The company has its roots in the year 1892. The founder of the company, Heinrich Schmitz, started building wagons in the family factory in Altenberge near Münster. The new business of the forge began to gain momentum in the late 1920s as a result of increasing mechanization.

In particular, then the company turned from a craft business into a manufacturer of industrial vehicles. The first vehicle trailer equipped with solid rubber tires came out in 1928.

Expansion, crises and reorientation

The company continued to expand during the 1960s and especially after the first oil crisis in the early 1970s. Additionally, large orders from the Near East increased the speed of the company's growth.

The start of the Iran-Iraq war put an end to orders from Arab countries in the 1980s and the Schmitz Cargobull trailer suffered a crisis. Political reforms in Eastern Europe and German Reunification gave the company new impetus. However, the company experienced a further decline in orders in the mid-1990s.

This resulted in a drastic transformation of production: The product range was reduced to 4 basic types, the number of required spare parts was significantly reduced, production and delivery times were reduced and the labor cost ratio fell. In March 1999, the company's IPO was halted due to poor demand for the shares. No further plans have been made for a new IPO since then.

In the business year 2004/2005 Schmitz Cargobull reported a turnover of more than €1 billion (€1,21 billion, 36.000 production vehicles) for the first time. Turnover had doubled in five years and 1.500 new employees had come on board.

Instead of an epilogue

Parts are clearly the most important part of your truck. In addition, the selection of spare parts, used or new, original or commercial, must be properly researched.
