Volvo Trucks opens first battery assembly plant

“This investment in batteries demonstrates our strong commitment to the electrification of trucking. Clearly by 2030, at least 50% of all trucks we sell worldwide will be electric. At the same time, it will be a carbon neutral company by 2040." says Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks.

Batteries made in Volvo

In the new battery factory, Samsung SDI cells and modules will be assembled into battery packs. In particular, they will be specially manufactured for the electric range of Volvo Trucks: Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX. In addition, the production of the series starts in the third quarter of this year.

The customer chooses

Each battery is 90 kWh and the customer can choose up to six battery packs (540 kWh) in one truck. In particular, the number on the batteries is based on the specific range and load capacity requirements of each customer.

Volvo Trucks designed the batteries to be later rebuilt, refurbished and reused. It is true that the factory itself operates with 100% renewable energy sources.

Target electric trucks

With production of three fully electric heavy-duty models starting this year in Europe, Volvo Trucks will offer a total of six electric truck models worldwide. It clearly covers everything from city distribution and waste management to regional transport and construction work.

“We are starting the production series of electric trucks as early as 2019, and Volvo is first to market in both Europe and North America. Also with the rapid development of charging networks and improvements in battery technology, I can say that we will see a rapid transformation of the entire trucking industry in the very near future,” says Roger Alm.

A relatively modest impact

The overall impact of today's battery production on the environment may be relatively modest. Even with electric vehicles, there is currently an environmental payback of less than a year on commercial vehicles. Indeed, this is the time it will take for the RES to produce as much energy as a truck consumes during production and the life of the system.

Instead of an epilogue

Spare parts are the most important part of your truck. At the same time, the choice of spare parts, used or new, genuine or commercial, must be properly researched.
